i posted this in the daddys only section but i thought i may aswell put it in here too as any advice will be good advice at the moment.

I found out recently that my wife is pregnant – 7 weeks gone now. It was a huge shock as we hadn’t been trying. The financial side really worries me and i’ve been thinking about things and i don’t know if i’m ready to be a daddy yet……

    Any words of advice welcme!

Hi tguy45, thanks for the post.

It’s a good thing that you’ve acknowledged the enormity of this situation and are seeking advice and help. One thing to remember is that the people closest to you who have parental/life experience are the ones who can help you the most. Whether it be siblings, parents, grandparents or friends, each one may carry an important piece of advice that the other one didn’t. So this is where i would start if i were you. Ask as many questions to those who are close to you as you can. You will get all the reassurance you need to become a great father I’m sure of it.

In regards to your worry about the financial side of bringing a baby into the world, there are 3 things to think about to make sure you stay financially stable through parenthood.

The first is adjusting your income. Taking the economic climate into account this may be hard to do but if you want to do it you can!

Secondly is adjusting your spending. Cut out the things in life for now you don’t need. I’m not suggesting you cut every pleasure out of your life that costs £x. Just remove the things you really can live without. ;-) As an example if you’re a smoker and continue to smoke, yet at the same time complain you can’t afford to have a baby, you’re really going to struggle on this one.

Third is adjusting your expectations. By this i mean don’t be hung up on buying the best of the best of everything for your unborn child. We all want to treat our first born, and that will never change, but be realistic! Most babies when they’re old enough get as much enjoyment from splashing in water or playing with an empty cardboard box than having the latest talking robot! Don’t be disheartened when people around you are buying the branded products and you’re not, so long as you’re doing the best you can, and what’s right for your child, then you’re onto a winner.

Finally, your finances will definitely go a lot further, because to be brutally honest you just won’t have the time to indulge in little luxuries or your hobbies as much as you did before your baby was here. One fact is when you’re out at work all day and you come home to your little one, it makes everything worthwhile. Your baby to be need’s your full attention and affection, so missing that football match with the boys isn’t going to be as hard as you think it’s going to be!

I hope this helps & good luck.
